CLASS DESCRIPTION:
Beginner:
Introduction to Flamenco. Basic flamenco technique. Posture, footwork, upper-body, arm movement, vueltas (turns) and compás (rhythm).
Advanced Beginner:
Focus on posture, upper body arm and hand technique, footwork technique. Flamenco rhythms with palmas (hand clapping) and dance structure. Some Flamenco dance experience recommended.
Intermediate Tecnnique:
A continuation of the Beginner Levels. Students should have experience both in Flamenco technique and compás. A more advanced technique will be covered on a longer and more complex combination with marcajes (choreographic movements performed during "cante") and pieces of choreography.
Intermediate/Advanced Technique:
The focus on this class is to improve arms, footwork, marcajes and vueltas with strengthening and rhythmical exercises to develop dance style and not just steps. Focus on core and arm strength and posture. Balance, precision and clarity are emphasized.
Intermediate / Advanced Choreography:
The focus on this class is to be able to dance a choreography and incorporate the whole body, and to be able to understand how a choreography is put in a certain structure with its different parts.
"BATA DE COLA":
Dancing with a bata de cola (dress or skirt with a train) is elegant and graceful and requires a degree of coordination and a prior basic technique in flamenco. This class is for intermediate to advanced flamenco students and focuses on the techniques involved in working with the bata as well as strengthening the specific parts of the body that are required for smooth maneuverability. Introduction of either a mantón (shawl) or abanico solidifies the lines, balance, coordination, etc. A bata de cola is required for the class.
"BULERIAS"
The bulerías occupy a special and supreme position in the world of flamenco, constantly undergoing change and wide open to spontaneity. The class will focus on dancing to the cante, finding an individual style and building confidence as well as mastering the cues to the guitarist for smooth transition into various segments of the dance with some improvisation.
LEVELS
* ABSOLUTE BEGINNER
* BEGINNER: a minimum of 1 year of flamenco training
* ADVANCED BEGINNER: 1 or 2 years of flamenco training is recommended.
* INTERMEDIATE: 3+ years of flamenco training is recommended.
* ADVANCED: 5+ years of flamenco training is recommended
